Game Boy online multiplayer

Retro gaming fans may soon have a new way to bring classic handheld multiplayer into the modern era. The GB-Link USB V2 is a USB-to-Game Boy link adapter designed to let players connect original Game Boy hardware online through a web browser.

The device brings traditional Game Boy online multiplayer functionality to systems that were originally built around local link cable play. That means players can use supported games for trading, battling, head-to-head matches, and other link cable features without needing another player in the same room.

Nintendo’s Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance systems all supported multiplayer through physical link cables. This made features like Pokémon trading, Pokémon battles, Tetris matches, and other local multiplayer modes possible.

The challenge today is that classic handheld fans are no longer always near other players with the right console, cartridge, and cable. GB-Link USB V2 aims to remove that limitation by connecting original hardware to the internet.

According to Hackster.io, the adapter works like a standard Game Boy link cable from the console’s perspective, but routes the connection online instead. This allows players to link with others around the world while still using real Game Boy hardware.

GB-Link USB V2 connects to a Game Boy system through the handheld’s link port. The other side connects to a computer or Android phone using USB-C. From there, players can use a compatible web browser to access the online connection tools.

The project’s Crowd Supply page says the adapter works through WebSerial and WebUSB, meaning users do not need to install drivers or download a separate app. It is designed to work in desktop Chrome and Firefox, as well as Chrome on Android.

The device is built around a Raspberry Pi RP2040 microcontroller and is bus-powered over USB. It also includes a physical Game Boy link port, a USB Type-C connection, an onboard button for firmware flashing, and an RGB status LED.

Supported Game Boy Systems and Features

GB-Link USB V2 is designed for the original Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance. It also supports compatible FPGA handhelds with physical link support, including devices such as the Analogue Pocket.

The adapter is not intended for software emulators or emulation handhelds, since it depends on a physical link port.

Some of the planned and supported web tools include:

Pokémon trading across Generations 1, 2, and 3
Pokémon Generation 3 battling, trading, and record mixing
Tetris, Dr. Mario, and Yoshi online multiplayer
Advance Wars and Advance Wars 2 online matches
Game Boy Printer support for saving Game Boy Camera photos
Game Boy Advance multiboot homebrew loading
GB/GBC cartridge ROM and save backup tools through GB Cart Doctor

These features could make the device especially useful for players who want to complete old Pokémon Pokédex entries, preserve cartridge saves, or revisit classic multiplayer modes without relying on local meetups.

Open-Source Hardware and Software

One major advantage of GB-Link USB V2 is its open-source approach. The firmware, web clients, launcher, and hardware design are being released openly. The Crowd Supply listing says the firmware and web tools are already public, while PCB and case design files are planned for release after the first units ship.

The GB-Link Launcher also allows users to update firmware directly through a browser and access available web applications in one place.

Why This Matters for Retro Gaming

GB-Link USB V2 is more than a convenience tool. It helps preserve a major part of handheld gaming history: local multiplayer features that were once central to the Game Boy experience.

Many classic games were designed around link cable connectivity. As original hardware ages and retro players spread out across different regions, features like trading, battling, and local multiplayer become harder to use as intended.

By moving the link cable experience online, GB-Link USB V2 gives retro fans a way to keep those modes alive while still using authentic consoles and cartridges.

GB-Link USB V2 is currently listed as “Coming Soon” on Crowd Supply. Interested buyers can sign up for updates and receive a notification when the crowdfunding campaign launches.

For retro gaming fans, collectors, and Game Boy enthusiasts, this adapter could become one of the most interesting hardware projects to watch. It combines original Nintendo handheld hardware with modern browser-based connectivity, giving classic link cable games a new life online.
